Long before perfume became a thing you sprayed on to be noticed, it was something else entirely a practice. In India, this was GandhaYukti: a documented science of scent, written into the scriptures, used not for performance but for the state it created within the person who wore it. To clear the mind. What our name means
OpenEgo is an invitation to let go.The ego is the identity we carry, the version of ourselves we hold up to the world. To open it is to loosen that hold to move beyond the self we perform and toward the self we simply are. Fragrance is the ritual of that practice. Not scent worn for others, but scent worn to come home to yourself.
It is the difference between smelling good and feeling whole.
How it started
OpenEgo took shape in early 2025, born from a simple observation that wouldn't let us go.Our scriptures hold a vast, carefully documented trove of fragrance compositions and formulations a body of knowledge built over centuries. Almost none of it lives on in the modern fragrance world. Today, most fragrance is significantly synthetic, and the genuine natural sources behind these ancient formulations have become elusive, difficult to find, and easy to imitate with something cheaper.We refused to take the shortcut. We went back to the original formulations, and then we did the harder work: tracing the real ingredients those compositions were built on, and securing authentic sources for each one. It took us about a year to go from the first idea to the first product we were proud to stand behind. There was never a moment we thought of stopping only the steady work of understanding exactly what we wanted to bring back, and bringing it. What you experience in an OpenEgo fragrance is that work ancient wisdom, sourced honestly, made by hand.
The lineage we carry
Our roots run through Siddha, one of the oldest systems of medicine in South India, traced to the sage Bogar at the Palani Murugan temple. Within Siddha lies a profound understanding of fragrance as a tool for personal betterment not decoration, but medicine for the mind and spirit.This is why Skanda/Lord Murugan sits at the heart of our identity, and why our emblem of the tree and the seated figure points back to this tradition. It is not ornament. It is a reminder of where this knowledge comes from, and the responsibility of carrying it forward faithfully. Our formulations draw from texts including the Brihat Samhita which devotes a chapter to the science of perfumery alongside the Gandhasara, Gandhavada, and other classical sources.
How we make it
Every OpenEgo fragrance is crafted from botanicals celebrated for centuries real plants, resins, and roots, never charcoal cores or synthetic shortcuts. We work in small batches, hand-blended in Bengaluru using traditional methods, with our formulations guided by both ancient text and modern formulators trained in Ayurveda and biochemistry.Our collections offer three ways to meet this tradition:
Classical — composed directly from the scriptures, without alteration. The fragrance as it was written.
Original — the same scriptural ingredients, with refinements made only to the fragrance, never to its integrity.
Modern — rooted in the scriptures, opened up with contemporary notes for those discovering this world for the first time.
