There is a question we get asked in two very different tones. From a customer, it sounds like: is this safe to burn around my child? From a retailer, it sounds like: what exactly is in this? They are the same question, and the answer comes from the same place.
What green chemistry actually is
Green chemistry is a set of twelve design principles published in the 1990s by Paul Anastas and John Warner. The core idea is unfashionably simple: it is better to prevent waste and hazard at the design stage than to treat them afterwards. Do not make the toxic thing and then filter it out. Do not make it.
Most of the principles were written for industrial chemists, but a handful map almost exactly onto how fragrance has been made in India for centuries — long before anyone gave the practice a name.
The four that shape what we make
Prevention over treatment. A formulation that never contains a phthalate needs no phthalate-free claim. We work from a restricted list at the design stage rather than reformulating under pressure later.
Renewable feedstocks. Our aromatic materials come from plants that regrow — flowers, resins, roots, woods from managed sources. Petrochemical aroma molecules are cheaper and more consistent. They are also finite, and they smell like it.
Safer solvents. The solvent is usually the largest single ingredient in any fragrance and the one nobody discusses. It is where a great deal of quiet harm hides.
Design for degradation. What happens to the molecule after it leaves the room matters. Persistent synthetic musks are now found in waterways worldwide because they were designed to last and nobody asked what came next.
Where it costs us
Honesty requires the other half. Natural materials vary by harvest — the rose oil from one season is not identical to the next, and we will not correct that with a synthetic. Botanical compositions are less tenacious than their synthetic counterparts; our diffusers last weeks, not months. And the raw materials cost several multiples more, which is visible in our pricing and always will be.
We think those are the right trade-offs. But they are trade-offs, and anyone who tells you their natural formulation performs identically to a synthetic one at the same price is selling you something other than fragrance.
What this does not mean
Natural is not automatically safe — plenty of botanical materials are potent sensitisers, and we test for that. Green chemistry is not a certification we hold; it is a design discipline we work to. And a fragrance made this way still belongs out of reach of children and away from open flame.
The claim we are making is narrower and more defensible than clean: we decide what goes in at the design stage, we can name every category we exclude, and we will tell you what we gave up to do it.
